Clark's powers are out of control, all being controlled by red kryptonite which seems to affect him different every time it's used. The source of this rock happens to be Jerry White, Perry's son who was just released from prison and shared a cell with Gene Newtritch, the original discoverer of the red rock. He's harming everything and everyone in sight and chooses to distance himself from the one he loves most until the problem passes.

Meanwhile Mr. Gadget and his son are using Jerry and the rock to attempt to rid the world of Superman and ransom the city out of billions of dollars, using Jerry's father as leverage.
