FAQs for the Lois & Clark Archive

I receive many emails about the website, aside from the thank you card ones (which I greatly appreciate) some are the same basic questions, and  I’ll get into detail with here to help anyone who may be confused.

  1. Where do you get all your media clips?

I didn’t become a big FoLC until third season, and taped everything I could. In the meantime I got on the Internet in July 1996 and met cool people who helped me with episodes and interviews I didn’t have. We traded each other for various things and my good friends Deb and Cookie provided me with tapes of footage I didn’t have. My co-webmaster Molly has provided a lot of stuff as well given she’s been an obsessive FoLC like myself almost since the beginning. Everything clip wise on this site is from our personal collections. We do not take from other sites and hope (even though I’ve found sites that have taken all from this one) that people would understand how much effort is put into this site and not just “take everything.”

  1. Why is the quality of some of the clips…not good?

Because they are old, on old tapes that have been run through VCRs for over 12 years and time has not been too kind to them. I also render them at WMV format at a pretty high format, but not TOO high because I realize some people still have dial-up, actually quite a few, and I don’t want them to wait too long to download clips.

  1. Why don’t you have the interviews from the DVDs on the site?

Because anything that could be easily, or eventually purchased, will not be included on the site. The point of the archive is to archive everything on Lois & Clark that is not possible to come by nearly 13 years after the show started.

  1. Why don’t you have the episodes on your site?

I don’t even think I HAVE to answer this one, but I do. I know Lois & Clark isn’t in syndication and that is a tremendous loss to future fans, but I will never put entire episodes of the series on the archive. I'm already playing too close to the copyright infringement line with the music videos, so there’s no way I’d try to get under Warner Brothers skin with putting entire episodes up.

5.How do you make your music videos?

I have every episode saved on my hard drive. I captured them from my videotapes and keep them there to grab clips of for the videos. I use a program called Pinnacle Studio 8 to make the videos and special transitions that had to be purchased separately. Now Pinnacle has Studio 10, but I prefer 8.

6. May I take clips from your videos to make my own?

No. I’ve gotten a lot of flack about this from people calling me greedy or other names for not wanting to “help’ people. In my eyes, you basically want me to make the video for you and giving yourself the credit. Yes, it may just be clips, but that’s like saying “I want to make a dress. Please someone give me thread, material and the sewing machine to do it.” I am very attached to my videos, and I think if you want to make them yourself, and I know a lot of people do, you should make the effort to get everything yourself. NOW, I do make exceptions. If you are missing a SPECIFIC scene, cannot find it, damaged video etc, and need that THAT I can do for you, but if I get an email asking me to send “a general clip of Clark talking to his parents” that could be ANY episode and I don’t think you’re thinking too much about the specific scene you want to use, or you would know and say “The scene from the pilot where Clark is talking to his parents at the table about Lois.” Then I know you care enough about the video to know which scene you need and in that case I will help. I’ve had this happen with my friend Molly because my copy of Don’t Tug On Superman’s Cape has problems due to a bad descrambler I had back in 95 and she will help me if the scene I need was damaged, and I will do the same for anyone who can prove they care that much about the video they are making to know exactly the scene they need, and if it’s over 30 seconds then I will question that as well, you generally never need that long of a clip for a video.

7. Can you send me a DVD of all your media clips so I can make my own website?

Do I even need to answer this one? Actually the email angered me so much I never responded to it. Basically NONE of the media clips from this site are even on DVD, and why would I burn them onto DVD in “full quality’ which isn’t even possible since most don’t look that great to begin with, just for someone else’s site with no compensation whatsoever? This may come off as venting, but any email that asks me to let someone use everything on my site for their own site, upsets me.

8. This site looks oddly familiar to one back from the 90s called In Loving Memory of Lois & Clark

That would be because THAT was my site as well. This site doesn’t have everything that was on that site, I cut down on the older screen caps and such, but it’s generally the same with the exception of better graphics

That's all for now, if you have any questions that are not on this site please feel free to email me at webmasters@loisandclarkarchive.com or directly at DaniPayson@aol.com
